Heading to a u-pick farm for the first time? A little preparation goes a long way. Here's everything you need to bring for a smooth, enjoyable trip.
The essentials
Containers Most farms supply baskets or boxes, but calling ahead never hurts. If you plan to pick a lot, bring your own large containers — it saves you from making multiple trips back to the weigh station.
Comfortable shoes Farm fields are uneven, often muddy after rain, and full of plant debris. Leave the sandals at home. Rubber boots are ideal for strawberry season when fields can be wet.
Sun protection You'll likely be in open fields with little shade. Bring sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat, and sunglasses — especially for berry picking where you're low to the ground and fully exposed.
Water Picking fruit is more physical than it looks. Bring more water than you think you'll need, especially on hot summer days.
For families with kids
- Snacks — kids get hungry fast and farms don't always have food stands
- Wipes or a small towel — berry juice stains immediately
- A change of clothes — assume your kids will end up covered in fruit
- A stroller or carrier for young children (check with the farm first — some fields aren't stroller-friendly)
Payment & practical items
- Cash — many smaller farms don't take cards, or charge a fee for card payments
- A cooler — especially for delicate berries on a hot day; they'll hold much better on the drive home
- Bags or boxes for transporting your haul safely
What NOT to bring
- Pets — most farms don't allow dogs in picking areas (food safety rules)
- Outside food into the picking area — you don't want cross-contamination
- More people than you have containers for — picking goes faster than expected
How much to pick
A good rule of thumb:
| Fruit | Amount per person |
|---|---|
| Strawberries | 4–6 lbs |
| Blueberries | 3–5 lbs |
| Apples | 10–15 lbs |
| Raspberries | 2–3 lbs |
Pick a bit more than you think you'll use — fresh-picked fruit freezes beautifully and most fruits make excellent jams.
